2005-12-01-Candle-lit vigil for Aids victims
Hundreds of people from across the Thames Valley have attended a candle-lit vigil to remember the victims of HIV and Aids.
About 300 people gathered at Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, for an evening service to mark World Aids Day.
Young people from the city blew out candles to symbolise how many people around the world are dying each day of Aids-related illnesses.
A recent UNAids report found three million people died worldwide in 2005.
About 570,000 of them were children, the report said.
Thursday's service was organised by development agency Christian Aid, with members from across Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire expected to attend the vigil.
Earlier, Jenny Ayres, who manages Christian Aid's work in the region, said: "HIV is a global crisis but we can all do something to tackle it.
"We hope this service will give people the opportunity to reflect on a very serious situation, and resolve to take action for positive change."
