2005-04-28-UN fights Aids in India military

The Indian government and the UN agency fighting HIV-Aids have announced a joint Aids education and prevention campaign in the Indian military.

UNAids said that with almost 1.5 million personnel and more than 500,000 reserves, the scheme could benefit a large section of the population.

The agency has congratulated the Indian government on joining the initiative, saying other countries should follow.

Last week, India denied claims that it was ignoring the HIV-Aids problem.

It said that claims made by the Global Fund to Fight Aids that India may have more cases than South Africa were "nonsense".

The Fund said that there could be as many as 8.5 million people with Aids or infected with HIV in India.
