2005-07-01-UNESCO Consultant Urges African Nations To Begin HIV/AIDS Programs in Early Childhood Education

UNESCO education consultant Susan Nkinyangi on Wednesday urged African countries to include HIV/AIDS prevention and management programs at all levels of education beginning in early childhood, the Panafrican News Agency reports.

Speaking at an advisory forum on HIV/AIDS and the role of education service commissions, Nkinyangi said that a lack of knowledge has been one of the main obstacles in fighting the pandemic, which has undermined progress for countries aiming to reach the U.N. Millennium Development Goal of universal education by 2015.

Nkinyangi also said most countries that fall under UNESCO's Nairobi, Kenya, office -- including Burundi, Eritrea, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda -- lack the appropriate policy framework to direct planning and implementation in the fight against the disease (Panafrican News Agency, 6/22).
