jaundice: yellow discoloration of the skin and whites of the eyes caused by the inability of the liver to break down the pigment bilirubin. Jaundice is often associated with liver damage or disease (e.g., hepatitis), with gallbladder disease, and with the excessive destruction of red blood cells.
